Emma Reynolds, MP for Wolverhampton North East (centre), pledges her support for IF with Roger Poole and Sharon Lindsay from Wolverhampton Christian Aid, Trevor Stockton from CAFOD and Mora O’Sullivan from Wolverhampton World Poverty Action

Trevor got together with other local campaigners Roger Poole and Sharon Lindsay from Wolverhampton Christian Aid and Mora O’Sullivan from Wolverhampton World Poverty Action to lobby Emma Reynolds ahead of next week’s UK Budget.

IF supporters are being asked to lobby their MPs before 15th March to ask them to press Chancellor George Osborne to keep his promise on life-saving aid and get UK companies to spill the beans on tax dodging in developing countries.

The group spent forty minutes with Emma during which, Trevor said, she “engaged actively with us on the issues.”

He said: “Over two million children die each year through not having enough to eat, and so this campaign urges investment in child nutrition and small-scale agriculture.”

Mora O’Sullivan added: “Ending tax dodging could save the lives of 230 children in poor countries every day.”

Emma pledged her support for the IF Campaign, saying: “The world has enough food for everyone if governments of rich countries share and play fair.”

She agreed to write to the Chancellor to support the campaign’s asks on aid and tax and she also pledged to support the campaign in any debates on the Budget.

The Enough Food For Everyone IF campaign is calling for:

  • Governments and investors to be forced to become more honest and open about the deals they make in the poorest countries that stop people getting enough food.
  • Governments to keep their promises on aid, invest to stop children dying from malnutrition and help the poorest people feed themselves through investment in small farmers.
  • Land to be used to grow food for people, not biofuels for cars, and an end to small farmers being forced off their land.
  • Governments to stop big companies dodging tax in poor countries, so that millions of people can free themselves from hunger.

The UK Budget on 20th March is an important opportunity to kick-start a process that could help end hunger for 870 million people worldwide. We want George Osborne to help save and transform millions of lives by keeping his promise to ensure 0.7% of national income goes towards life-saving aid, and announcing that the Finance Bill will make UK companies operating in poor countries spill the beans on any tax dodging.
