St Joseph’s Successful 2013: Some great tips for parish events.

Members of St Joseph’s, Burntwood have shared with us their annual report. It is great to see such an active CAFOD community within the parish, and a wonderful source of ideas to try out in your own parish! 2013 has been a particularly successful year for CAFOD at St Joseph’s. The balance of money raised has amounted to  more than  an amazing £3000!   Our group consists of twelve volunteers, including  long-standing members  who have shown great loyalty and commitment throughout the more than 20 years since it was set up by Margaret and Peter Taylor.

Our CAFOD group formerly asks the parish for financial support twice a year, at the Lenten and Harvest fast days. In addition, volunteers raise funds with sales and  happy social events.   One of the most memorable in 2013 was Bernard Mills’ 90th birthday bash  in March. People came from far and wide, through the snow, to celebrate.  And the event raised nearly £800! Donations just kept coming in for months! A painting, by a local artist and given  to Bernard, was auctioned in November and raised another £ 50 which was given to the Philippines appeal along with another £504  given over two weekends.

In November we had our ever-popular Cheese and Wine Party which is always well supported. This was a great evening and raised an amazing £359.63  for CAFOD.

Fundraising is ongoing. We had our The Big Brew in February. This is a celebration and promotion of Fair Trade.  We had a wonderful cake stall, with cakes and preserves donated by parishioners. The simnel cakes were especially popular!  Alice and Peter again did their bacon sandwiches and donated the takings to CAFOD.  We also donate to CAFOD 10% of the profit we make on the Traidcraft stall each week.

Further funds were raised by the book stall, the Lenten lunches which were so well supported, our Summer raffle, and the Harvest Mass and sale, again  including the bacon sarnies!

In November we received a further £227.00 from a golden wedding celebration!  Money was donated by the happy  couple to CAFOD in lieu of presents. We also received money from two very  poignant funerals this year.  Throughout the year our treasurer, Pete Taylor,  is given one-off  donations, often anonymously. And, of course we have our collection box in the lobby which fills quickly.

Thanks St Joseph’s for your dedication, and some wonderful inspiration! If your parish has held any CAFOD events, please share with us at birmingham@cafod.org.uk
