During National Volunteers Week, we are celebrating our amazing volunteers. There are some many different volunteer roles wihin CAFOD from volunteer who write to their MPs, to those who speak at mass and those who educate the young at schools. One of the ways that our volunteers make a huge impact is by organising fun events, to involve their local community and raise money for some of the most remote communities in the world.
One such event was a quiz night; CAFOD volunteer Simon Swanwick tells us about the night and his volunteering experiences.
“We held the Quiz for CAFOD on Friday 6 May at Whitmore Reans Club, the local Working Men’s Club (they still call it that!). One of the parish CAFOD group has a relation who is an official there, and they kindly let us have the use of the room free. The quiz was compiled and fronted by Lizzie McCamphill, a young parishioner (25yrs).

“She has done them for us before, and they’re always very enjoyable – not just sitting and answering questions, but generally running around. In one of the rounds, a team member was gives a list of sporting activities that they had to mime to the other members of the team, trying to beat the clock – which caused a great deal of hilarity! There were 7 teams, each team being asked for only £5, but, of course, there was a Raffle and we raised £105!
“I have been involved with CAFOD for a long time. Two of us formed a ‘CAFOD group’ in the Wolverhampton parish of St Peter and St Paul 40-odd years ago. (I can’t believe it!!) We felt it would be the most effective way to help our brothers and sisters in the developing world. For most of its life, the group has been six, but it’s recently expanded to nine! We organise regular fund-raising events.
“As well as the occasional quiz, we have Bingo evenings, raffles (Easter and Christmas), sponsored events (eg ‘hymnathon’), produce sales, etc., etc. The parish is very supportive and very generous (although it’s not always easy to get them to come to events!) I think the publicity surrounding the events keeps CAFOD’s work in the forefront of their minds.
(By the way, we’ve used all the quiz questions that CAFOD has provided. We thought the quizzes were very well produced. We’re looking forward to the next one!)
